What Family Link Controls on YouTube
Family Link is Google's account and device management system for children. It sets YouTube content levels and manages the child's Google account — but its YouTube-specific controls are narrower than many parents expect.
Summary
Family Link manages the child's Google account (creation, recovery, app installation approval) and device settings (screen time, location). For YouTube specifically, it sets the supervised content level and Shorts daily limit. It cannot approve or block individual channels, hide comments, block downloads, or remove ads.

Device-level controls (not YouTube-specific)
- Screen time daily limits and bedtime schedules
- App installation approval
- App blocking (can block the YouTube app entirely)
- Location tracking
- Chrome web filtering
Boundaries of Family Link's authority
- Account-bound: Only works when the child is signed in with their supervised account
- Cannot manage iOS YouTube: Family Link manages Google accounts but cannot enforce settings on the iOS YouTube app the way it does on Android
- No per-channel control: Cannot create a channel whitelist or blacklist
- School accounts excluded: Google Workspace for Education accounts are managed by the school, not Family Link
- TV limitations: Smart TV YouTube apps may not fully respect Family Link content level settings
How WhitelistVideo fills the gaps
WhitelistVideo operates at a different layer than Family Link and provides the controls Family Link lacks:
| Gap in Family Link | WhitelistVideo solution |
|---|---|
| No channel approval | Full channel whitelisting (approve-only model) |
| No comment hiding | Hide Comments toggle |
| No download blocking | Block Downloads toggle |
| No ad blocking | Best-effort ad blocking |
| Shorts: limit only | Complete Shorts block toggle |
Both tools can run simultaneously — Family Link for account/device management, WhitelistVideo for YouTube-specific content control.
